Route: Kutaisi β Tskaltubo β Tsageri β Lentechi β Tsana β Zugaro Pass β Ushguli β Mestia.
Approximately 210km and 5β6 hours without extended stops. The road is mostly asphalt or concrete, but very winding with some repair sections and unpaved stretches.
β οΈ Zugaro is a seasonal pass. Transit is typically possible from around June through October, but it depends on snow and weather. Always check road conditions before departing.
Kutaisi β Tskaltubo β Tsageri β 68 km
Good paved road through Lechkhumi. Many turns, views of Khvamli and vineyards along the way.
β½οΈ Connect and M Oil fuel stations in Tsageri.
Tsageri β Lentechi β 22 km
Good asphalt. Lentechi has cafes, shops, banks, Spar, and Daily market.
β½οΈ Connect in Lentechi is the last gas station before Zugaro. No fuel stops until Mestia.
πΏ A large Stalin monument stands along the road:
42.97105, 42.80578
Lentechi β Tsana β 52 km
The road follows the river valley through villages and constant switchbacks. Speeds are low. If you're prone to motion sickness, keep this in mind.
Currently there are localized repairs from landslides and erosion damage.
π Temporary bridge:
42.83818, 42.82070
A temporary bridge stands here, built after the previous one was washed away by the river in late August. Access has been restored, but after heavy rain this section should be checked extra carefully.
π§ Road repair, approximately 2β3 km unpaved:
42.76447, 42.80238
Passable in dry weather, but there are rough patches, dust, and road machinery.
Tsana β Zugaro β Ushguli β 21 km
Tsana sits at around 1700m, Zugaro Pass at approximately 2620m.
π Pass:
42.45331, 42.59431
The pass section is concrete. In good weather it's no longer the old rough wilderness road, but snow, ice, fog, and loose rocks from rockfall can quickly change conditions.
Before reaching the pass there's another large repair section:
π§ start:
42.58941, 42.45140
π§ end:
42.44149, 42.57525
Unpaved road, narrow sections, and construction equipment are possible here.
π From the Tsana side, one of the most spectacular views on the route appearsβthe view of Shkhara.
Ushguli β Mestia β 47 km
Most of the road is concrete. There's a tunnel construction section; road conditions near the works may change in rain.
π Do you need an SUV?
In dry weather most of the route can be driven in a regular car. However, very low ground clearance is undesirable due to repairs and unpaved sections.
After heavy rains, landslides, washouts, rocks on the road, and temporary closures are possible. In autumn, snow on Zugaro is the main risk.
π± Connectivity: Magti works almost everywhere on the route, according to our observations. Geocell may drop out on the pass. Download an offline map in advance.
π Summary:
β’ 210 km
β’ 5β6 hours without extended stops
β’ Zugaro β 2620 m
β’ surface mostly asphalt and concrete
β’ repairs and unpaved sections present
β’ temporary bridge after September washout
β’ last gas station β Lentechi
β’ seasonal route
The main advantage of the Zugaro route is that Ushguli is directly on the way. If you're not in a rush, treat this route as a full day of travel.
Before leaving, always check the pass and road conditionsβin the mountains they can change within hours.
β WHEN TO TAKE THE ZUGDIDI ROUTE INSTEAD
The Zugdidi route makes more sense if:
β’ it's winter or the Zugaro Pass is closed;
β’ heavy snow has fallen;
β’ there have been serious rains;
β’ you need the most predictable arrival;
β’ you'd rather avoid a high-altitude seasonal road;
β’ your final destination is Mestia specifically and Ushguli isn't in your plans.
